Admittance, the First Step of Drug Rehab
Whether it is a 12-step program or no, getting the alcoholic or addict to admit they have a problem can be essential. In a 12-step drug rehab it is the first step, the most important step for some. Alcohol and drug addiction is controlling. It can be a life battle to give up something so controlling. When the addict admits to themselves their life is unimaginable it can make a difference in their outlook entirely. There is a stigma that is developed psychologically over time. The mind set of alcoholic or addict is controlled by the constant need to use and maintain addictive practices. This stigma is a defensive barrier that protects the addiction. The addict feels that using is not a problem. Meanwhile, the people surrounding them begin to see the life of an addict deteriorate. The psychological stranglehold continues to increase. This makes it harder and harder for the addict to realize what the addiction is actually doing to them. Alcohol and drug rehab can be a difficult process for those unwilling to admit they have a problem. An addict goes through the motions of rehab; without ever admitting to themselves they need to change. After rehab, this same individual is all too eager to relapse. Unfortunately, they fall deeper into chemical dependency. The safe thing is to point the finger at the rehab and say it didn't work. When realistically the individual has not admitted to themselves there is a problem. Call it hard headed. It's something that is developed over years of addiction and abuse of substances. The psychological hold of addiction can make admittance hard. It means giving up something that is an influential facet of the addict's lives; albeit a negative one. In using they feel comfortable, even though their lives are spinning out of control. For some it may take hitting bottom, or sinking to new low before they see the light. No matter the situation, admitting that they need help to themselves is the first step in the process of recovery. Drug rehab programs have come a long way in recent years. They have tools and therapies to assist in the admittance process. They can use psychotherapy to determine any underlying problems that have a hand in drug and alcohol abuse. They can address the behavioral problems that have lead to addiction. They can even determine and treat things like depression or bi polar disorder. Treatment for things like these can help the addict see the importance for admittance. Once the addict realizes their problem, the process of recovery can begin. It isn't easy, but for those who have overcome addiction, they will tell you it was worth it every time. This information was made available by Cirque Lodge.
