Continuing Care for After Drug Rehab

Helpful Aftercare Strategies to Assist in Continued Sobriety

Recovery with Drug Rehab and Continuing Care An addiction to alcohol or drugs takes time to overcome. Even after a successful drug rehabilitation stay, it still requires time. Drug rehab is imperative at getting the addict off of the stuff. However, the impulse to use is still ever present in the brain. Treatment gives the addict or alcoholic a new found focus and strategies to stave off this impulse. Maintaining the focus, back in the real world, is entirely something else. When an addict in recovery is faced with a lot of the same old influences they had before rehab, it can be difficult.

Continuing care is beneficial to many who have gone through rehab. Utilizing the aftercare programs in recovery can be the key to maintaining a focus on sobriety, and not surrendering to relapse. Most of the leading drug rehab programs out there provide elements of continued aftercare. Aftercare can be something as simple as 12-step attendance. It can also be more involved, like personal and group therapy sessions. Continuing aftercare is voluntary, unless it is appointed by law. Often times it is up to the individual in recovery to utilize elements of continued care.

12-step Meetings - If the addict has been through a 12-step based drug rehabilitation program, chances are that continued care will involve furthering the 12-step program. 12-step meetings are held all the time in virtually every community. A part of continued care will be to regularly attend such meetings. Regular attendance can help to maintain a recovery focus. It provides an environment to keep a connection with a higher power, and provides support from others in recovery.

A Sponsor - A part of 12-step recovery is also the personal assistance of an addiction sponsor. This is usually an individual who has worked the 12-steps; and is an example of successful recovery. The advantage to a sponsor is the one-on-one support they provide in recovery. In the difficult times, when struggling, an addiction sponsor can be instrumental at providing the strength needed to maintain sobriety.

Outpatient Therapy Sessions - Not all addiction therapists work in a drug rehab. There are many who privately practice in local communities. Continued care after drug rehab can involve continued therapy. Outpatient treatment can be intimate one-on-one settings, or they can be in group sessions. For those in need of continued therapeutic support after rehab, it is nice to know that it is available.

When rehab is completed, it is advantageous to have recovery plan in place. This recovery plan must be patterned after the needs of the individual. Some may just require 12-step meetings, while others will need regular therapy from an outpatient therapist. Still, it is up to the individual in recovery whether or not they utilize this plan. With a focus on sobriety, and the assistance of continued outpatient care, successful recovery can be achieved.
