Drug Rehab and Learning to Live for the Day
When you talk to someone who is in recovery, they can tell you the days, months and years they have gone without drug or drink. Part of this is due to the focus of daily efforts on staying sober. Focusing on the daily successes can be small and simple steps towards a lifetime of successfully kicking addictive habits. This focus is originally taught in drug rehab and the 12-step process. A daily focus can be imperative for those in recovery at staying strong.Living for the day means overcoming the past. It is all too easy to dwell in the past when it comes to addiction. Focusing on mistakes can be a negative. The past should not be forgotten. One should look at past mistakes to learn and grow from them. It is up to the addict to make a conscious effort to make amends for these mistakes when needed. The addict will find support from individuals when a conscious effort to overcome the past is realized. Individuals hurt by the addict's behavior will soon forget past problems; when they see these recovery efforts. Living for the day means not fearing the future. Fear is an emotion that addiction thrives on. When the addict takes one day at a time, there is no room for fearing the unknown. It hasn't happened yet. It's probable it won't happen, so why be afraid of it. Recovery can include making goals for the future. These can be more than recovery goals. They can be goals that involve family, jobs, schooling, and can lead to a greater success in life. By making a conscious decision to remain sober each day, such goals can be achieved. Time flies, and the days that go by in recovery begin to add up. The influences of addiction take time to overcome. Each day sober is one more day the influence of addiction loses its control. Living for the day breaks down the decisions that need to be made within each day. One of these decisions is to not drink or do drugs. When the person in recovery can make this conscious decision, it can make relapsing less likely. Days turn to weeks, and months, and years. Soon a successful recovery is achieved. The first day of sobriety, for a lot of people, begins with drug rehab. Rehab gives the addict a safe haven for building one day at a time. Treatment is usually broken down into 30 day increments. These are 30 days of being sober. After drug rehab, a person can build on those days. By focusing each day, it is easier to overcome the struggles and influences that can have a hand in addiction.
