Drug Rehab Takes a Look at Prescription Drug Abuse

The Growing Problem with Prescription Drug Abuse and Addiction

Drug Rehab and Prescription Drug Abuse You couldn't tell by looking at them. Most of them wouldn't even say that it is a problem. Therein lays the danger of prescription drug abuse. It is a problem, a largely growing problem, and it is affecting more and more individuals each day. And in looking at those who may struggle with it, it is not usually the people you'd expect. Drug rehab programs are seeing an increase of addiction cases associated to prescription drugs. These are people who months prior were ordinary folk like you and I. However, the addictive makeup of certain prescription drugs affected them to a point where a problem with abuse got out of hand.

Abusing prescription drugs can begin so subtly. A person is prescribed a drug to meet the needs of a particular ailment or problem. The doctor will make recommendations on frequency and amount of use. The prescribed amount is usually a standard measurement of dosage to provide effective relief. Over a period of time however, the body can become accustomed to the effects of the drug in the system and standard dosage may seem ineffective. A person can have thoughts of "These pills aren't working", or "Maybe I should take one more with my doses." An increase of dosage should always be consulted with a medical professional. Because of the addictiveness of some drugs, an increase can result in an abusive behavior, and a consistency of needing to increase the dose to feel the effect. Over time, the increase in dosage problem can escalate into a realistic drug addiction problem requiring drug rehab.

Usually when talking about prescription drug abuse problems, the culprit that comes to mind is pain pills (analgesics). Analgesics have a narcotic/opiate makeup; making them highly addictive in the right situations. But analgesics are not the only prescription drugs that have an addictive makeup. Many individuals are prescribed benzodiazepine (tranquilizers) based drugs for anxiety and panic problems. Additionally a number of other psychotropic drugs prescribed for things like depression and attention deficit disorder have also shown results of drug abuse issues.

The alarm has been sounded when it comes to prescription drug abuse and addiction. The reason for this awareness is by whom it affects. Normally when you think a drug addict, a number of stereotypical thoughts and images probably fall into place. Prescription drug abuse in a majority of cases does not live into this stereotype. People who struggle with drug abuse do not fit the mold of a 'drug addict.' People who struggle with prescription drug issues can be our friends, our mothers, and even the dependable co-worker. Drugs that are prescribed to us to help us can also be our biggest problem when we are dealing with addiction issues. We don't know what is going on in others lives that can make the desired affects of these drugs so appealing.

So how does one determine a prescription drug problem? Look at how the drugs are being used. Are they taken according to dosage, or in excessive amounts? Are you looking for prescription refills despite the doctor's recommendations? Is the practice of taking prescription drugs more about the feeling they provide than what they were prescribed for? When addiction is involved, and it can not be controlled, the best choice is drug rehab. Many drug rehabs have altered addiction treatment to be personalized specifically for prescription drug addiction. One such program is Cirque Lodge in Sundance Utah. Cirque Lodge is a leading alcohol treatment and drug rehab program in the privacy of the healing Rocky Mountains.
