Drug Rehab Where the 'Sky is the Limit'
It's a sunny and calm afternoon high in the Wasatch Mountain Range of Utah's ski country. A private helicopter is touring these mountains filled to capacity with passengers. They see a couple of people hiking a long a tall peak; well over 10,000 feet of sea level. One of the passenger's comments on the people: "With all that snow, how did they hike up that?" Everyone is smiling and you would never have thought this private helicopter flight was a part of a drug rehab program. Cirque Lodge is a private addiction treatment program in Utah that uses activities, like these helicopter flights, to assist in the recovery process.Cirque Lodge is the only drug rehab that owns a private helicopter used exclusively by the drug rehab residents. It is a Eurocopter EC-130, the limousine of helicopters. Residents have named it the 'Rainbow' because of its colorful paint scheme. A few days each week the Rainbow arrives at the addiction treatment facility to take a select few on this private mountain experience that involves aerial sight seeing and mountain hiking. These helicopter flights are a part of a greater program offered in Cirque Lodge's drug and alcohol treatment. A number of activities are used in Cirque’s experiential program. It is a program that uses fun and new activities to drive home the point of learning a myriad of recovery skills. Activities include, fly fishing, archery, river rafting, pottery, and even the challenge of an indoor rock climbing and ropes facility. These activities provide more than a needed release from the rigors of overcoming addiction. They have also been effectively designed to provide aspects of recovery tools and cognitive behavioral therapy. The private helicopter flights are used in conjunction with the 12-step aspect of the drug rehab program. In drug rehab, only the first initial steps of the 12-step program are covered. The second step of the 12-step process is finding a connection with a power greater than one's self. During this mountain flight, residents have a chance to do a bit of hiking, as well as have some quiet time to do a bit of soul searching. In this time one can find a connection to a higher power and receive a vital spiritual experience. After about an hour and a half, the Rainbow returns to the Studio location of Cirque Lodge. The passengers all disembark and move away from the landing pad of the helicopter. They watch as the helicopter ascends back into the sky and returns to hangar. As they walk back towards the studio they talk about their experience, there are smiles all around. Replacing the addiction with these types of experiences has helped a number of Cirque Lodge's residents find recovery. It is one of the reasons it is nation's most sought after treatment facilities.
