Using Group Therapy in Drug Rehab
Walk into a drug rehab program during the day and you might see the group gathered in a circle. They are probably participating in a group therapy session. Drug rehabs are effectively balanced with a number of personal and group based therapies. In drug rehab, group therapy can be carried out in a number of settings. It can be co-ed, just males or females, or can involve members of the addict's family. Group therapy covers an array of topics, but all adhere to the underlying theme of sobriety, which is why they are there in the first place.A group therapy session will usually consist of a varied amount of rehab clients and a counselor or therapist. The counselor or therapist conducts and moderates the group. Group therapy is a chance for the group to share on addiction topics and relate personal experiences. At first, some may not be willing to share, but experience within the group can help them to open up and share. Individuals can discuss elements of their life. The group offers support and provides feedback for different things. The entire time the counselor or therapist mediates and offers his expertise into the discussion. Individuals can learn from the experiences of those in the group. They can be an example to them for life after rehab. Group therapy can teach the addict new ways to relate to others. Addiction can be a very isolating situation. The addict my feel like they are pitted against the rest of the non using world. The power of the group can help them realize that they are not alone in their struggles. There are always people in recovery and in treatment programs that understand and can help them get through it. There are individuals who have been through similar situations and can help them through the dark times. Through this the addict can develop the desire to ask for help; on their own. Group therapy is used in a balance with a personal therapy program. Many times there are more personal problems. These are things that are really not meant to be discussed in group. Personal therapy in drug rehab provides a one-on-one setting for dealing with the underlying issues of addiction. The addict or alcoholic can use these sessions to address the more difficult things, and use the group sessions to build support for the addiction problems. After rehab is completed, oftentimes those in recovery rely on support groups. They have developed in drug rehab a comfort for being in group therapy settings. Continuing with support groups after addiction treatment can help to maintain a success in recovery. This information was provided by Cirque Lodge.
