Treating Addiction in Drug Rehab

Personalizing Treatment to Address a Number of Issues

Personalized Treatment in Drug Rehab In a therapy session in drug rehab, a number of things are addressed. This is due to all the things that can make up an alcohol or drug addiction. Drug rehab programs have altered the way they offer treatment to address a more personalized approach for each client. As alcohol and drug addiction are a very individual problem, treatment is designed to work with the individual according to their needs.

Addiction, for many, is something that some individuals just have a predisposition for. Science has shown us that it very well is part of a hereditary DNA makeup. These people, unfortunately, when exposed to addictive materials are more likely to fall subject to the influences that these materials have on the central nervous system. For some, it only takes a one time use, but for most it is a process of using and abusing alcohol and drugs over an extended period of time.

What fuels an addiction, or abuse, of alcohol or drugs is very different for each individual. This can be a culmination of factors, both psychological and sociological. These problems can be a product of traumatic experiences, such as a physical abuse. It also can be created by the influence of drugs and alcohol in the home, or in social environments. The drugs and alcohol create a numbing effect against the more painful underlying factors. However, these problems have not gone away, they are just suppressed. Adding an addiction to the fray of these underlying problems only compounds the overall problems of that individual.

Addiction can come about by medical conditions as well. On occasion, medication used to treat some medical problems can develop into an addiction. The medications are designed only to be used in the short term, but the addictive makeup of the individual can create an attachment to them. An additional medical problem that fuels addiction is psychiatric disorders, such as depression or anxiety. Studies have shown that an individual with such a disorder is more susceptible to influences of drugs and alcohol in the central nervous system.

All of that said there are a lot of things that go into an alcohol or drug addiction. Treatment for addiction has got to be personalized to meet these needs. A rigorous assessment process and personal, one-on-one therapy are used by drug rehab programs to address the underlying issues for each client. Drug rehabs have also adopted dual diagnosis services to help those with co-occurring psychiatric disorders. By personalizing treatment the drug rehab program can get to the heart of the matter when it comes to treating alcohol and drug addiction in the individual.
