Winter Activities in Drug Rehab Help with Recovery
High in the Wasatch Mountain range, a handful of people are trying to master the art of walking across the snow in snow shoes. Each one of them bundled against the cold, they hike along mountain peaks, laughing and joking as they carry on. These people are residents of the Cirque Lodge alcohol and drug rehab program. They are participating in an experiential activity, part of the unique drug rehab process at Cirque Lodge. How the residents got to this mountain peak is the interesting part. They were flown here in a private helicopter owned by the addiction treatment facility. The snow-shoeing activity is just a part of a private flight and tour of the local mountains. On this winters flight, the residents in drug rehab saw herds of deer, elk, and even a moose and her calf. They enjoyed the mountains of Utah from a completely different vantage point, high in the air. Then up on a frosty mountain top the helicopter lands and gives the residents a chance to hike around. Cirque Lodge has an interesting balance of experiential activities. They use these activities as a needed balance to the more rigorous aspects of drug rehab therapy. However, these activities go far beyond than just an enjoyable release from addiction problems. Many of the experiential activities are equally designed to teach coping strategies and communication skills. Though these activities are fun, they also are effective at teaching needed things for recovery. This private helicopter flight is used to help the drug rehab residents with the 12-step program. The second step of the 12-step process begins with finding a power greater than oneself to assist in recovery and addiction issues. Whether it is God, or a different plane of spirituality, finding a higher power to assist in the recovery process can make all the difference. Most drug rehab programs, based in the 12-step modality, look to provide each drug rehab participant with a solid foundation of this integral step. Prior to boarding the helicopter and returning to the drug rehab facility, a silence is observed. Some residents even sit quietly in the snow. They meditate and think about making the important decisions in their life. Some of them search to find within themselves a spiritual enlightenment and to find that higher power. A power that can greatly help them stay sober and achieve success in recovery.
