Yoga, a Unique Approach to Drug Rehab

An ancient art helps in teaching addiction treatment techniques.

Practicing Yoga in Drug Rehab A unique hodgepodge of individuals all stand quietly with eyes affixed on the instructor. They then attempt to pull off the same poses as the instructor. This conglomeration of men learning yoga comes in all shapes and sizes. They are diversified bunch of males from young adults to middle-age. The instructor praises one young man at his achievement of a particularly difficult yoga positioning. It isn't the beginner's course at a local fitness club. Its part of an alcohol and drug rehab program. Cirque Lodge, a private addiction treatment center in Sundance Utah, has adapted yoga as part of the program for recovering alcoholics and addicts.

The ancient art of Yoga has been around for thousands of years. It was anciently used as a spiritual path to enlightenment. In recent years, practicing yoga has become a popular form of exercise. However, the true practice of yoga goes much deeper than that. Yoga provides a discipline of focusing body, mind and spirit into a harmony. The ancients believed this practice would provide them with a spiritual growth with God. Yoga today is not so religiously based, but still has adapted many of the original concepts. It is a psychosomatic exercise of creating harmony within self.

There is no greater individual in need of harmony within self than someone in a struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. No part of body, mind, or spirit is in harmony when mired down by addiction. The mind, affected by addiction, is out of balance and in turmoil. Part of the drug rehab process is to bring a balance to mind and body. Because of this, yoga was a natural fit for drug rehab programs. It provides a practice of balancing body, mind and spirit, and supplied a unique platform for learning recovery techniques.

Today, many drug rehabs use yoga as an effective balance to the more focused efforts of addiction treatment. It is multifaceted in its approach. Yes, it is needed exercise, but it also teaches techniques and skills that the addict and alcoholic can use through out there life. These techniques can help them maintain a focus in what is a dangerous and frightful world. When the addict's lives begin to lose focus, using yoga can help to restore balance. Every yoga session ends with a relaxation, and a focus on being relaxed. For those in addiction treatment, this practice can help them to relax when they are dealing with struggles and anxiety brought on by impulses of addiction.

Back at Cirque Lodge, a middle-aged gentleman stands with hands on hips. He focuses on the fellow comrades in the yoga class as they are posed in unison. The instructor quickly helps him with the techniques of the pose. It is followed with an explanation on the importance of this pose within the series of yoga poses that are being performed. The middle-aged man makes a funny remark; there are chuckles from the other men in the class. Then a silence, as everyone once again focuses on the yoga stretching technique. It is the part of the drug rehab program that many of them look forward to.
