Understanding Crack Addiction

Crack of course is a street name for a variation of the illicit drug cocaine. In the mid 1980's cocaine dealers discovered a way to mass market their drug to a more widespread clientele. The combination of ammonia and baking soda with cocaine meant much higher volumes of the drug to be sold. This led to the crack epidemic of the late 1980's into the early 1990's. During this time there was a greater increase in not only crack addiction cases but the evolving change of addiction treatment programs.
Crack comes in a crystallized rock or flake form that is freebased (smoked). Crack poses more of an addiction issue than the powder form of cocaine in one simple way. The influence of crack when smoked is felt in the individual almost instantaneously. The influence is not felt as long in the system as powder cocaine, which leads to further crack abuse to prolong the effects. Cocaine has the ability to block the dopamine receptors of the brain increasing the sensation of euphoria unlike other drugs. The blocking of the dopamine patterns is a chief cause in crack addiction.
Crack addiction is the inability to control the use of the drug. Crack addiction can lead to a number of trying things including loss of employment, home, and even family. In the 1990's the term "crack-head" was created to describe the people who have lost everything to their addiction to crack. Crack addiction has been known to lead to criminal behavior, and many laws have been passed that are more stern for those suffering from crack abuse.
Long Term Effect of Crack Addiction
Crack cocaine is a stimulant. Stimulants with prolonged use can wreak havoc on the central nervous system. Those who suffer from crack addiction can have a number of neurological problems associated with their addiction. Anxiety and paranoia are two common issues with crack addiction. Crack abuse can also lead to skin irritability. Crack addicts can oftentimes be witnessed incessantly scratching at their skin.
Cocaine speeds up the heart and can lead to a number of deadly heart related problems. It has been documented in a number of cases that too much use of crack can directly lead to heart attacks and heart failure. Cocaine has also been known to cause great respiratory problems including lung failure.
Crack addiction can also lead to many dietary problems in the individual. Crack abuse supplants the appetites for food and drink and a person can go for a great length of time in between eating. This leaves the crack addict undernourished and frail in appearance. All of the effects of crack addiction can be life threatening when not properly treated by an
crack addiction program.
Crack Addiction Withdrawal
When a dependency to the drug is developed it can be difficult without treatment to overcome on ones own. A key aspect to this is in the withdrawal stage. During withdrawal the craving for crack greatly increases and the body can go through many adverse reactions. These reactions can range from insomnia and restlessness to nausea and even the shakes. While not life threatening in most cases, withdrawal from crack addiction can severely effect and even damage the individual.
To help against withdrawal from crack, detox services can greatly help in this process. Usually every addiction treatment program for crack addiction begins with at least a period of detoxification. This helps treat withdrawal and the direct problems with dependency. Stimulants do a number of detrimental things to the central nervous system and close monitoring helps to control any significant problems directly related to withdrawal.
Recovery from Crack addiction
At Cirque Lodge, recovery begins with an individualized program. We feel that providing direct treatment for each individual is the most effective approach to treating the addiction. Persons suffering from crack addiction benefit from their very own primary addiction counselor to work with in the
drug rehab program on a daily basis. This one-on-one setting also greatly helps to resolve concerns and meet specific needs while at our
crack addiction center.
To properly treat crack addiction it takes a balance or many aspects of therapy. At Cirque Lodge, we provide this balance in our addiction treatment program. Residents of the program receive crack addiction treatment in both individual and group settings. Treatment consists of the
12-step program, cognitive behavioral therapy, independent counseling, psychotherapy, family therapy, and a number of other effective treatment models. Incorporated into these aspects of treatment is our
experiential therapy program which balances out the day at our drug rehab center. The addiction treatment program at Cirque Lodge is both effective and fun for those in need of treatment from crack addiction.
To ensure continued success in recovery, Cirque Lodge also has an aftercare program in place. This program can greatly help to prevent against relapse and continually build strength in recovery. From the initial stages of drug rehab to an involved support network upon completion of addiction treatment, Cirque Lodge is dedicated to providing its residents with recovery from their addictions.
