One of the greatest challenges in our society today is that of drug addiction. In the last few decades we have witnessed an epidemic of widespread drug and alcohol addiction all over the world, including the United States. As addiction to alcohol and drugs has increased, community drug treatment recovery programs have had funding cut, and the problem continues to grow far beyond what anyone could have imagined thirty years ago.

Although the addiction problem is enormous, fortunately, there are still ways of getting alcohol rehab or drug rehab help and support through drug addiction recovery programs in a variety of venues, including twelve-step groups, substance abuse counseling, community programs, intensive outpatient programs, and inpatient residential treatment programs. The Cirque Lodge addiction treatment center, located in the mountains of Sundance Utah, is a leading provider of private drug and alcohol treatment programs.

Twelve-Step Recovery Groups

Drug Addiction
In 1935, the growth of drug addiction recovery programs increased with the organization of the first A.A. group, followed by the 1939 publication of Alcoholics Anonymous, frequently called the Big Book, the basic text of Alcoholics Anonymous. In the first sixteen years following its publication, the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous grew to 150,000 recovered alcoholics, and they report that their membership continues to grow at a rate of about twenty per cent a year.

In 1953 Narcotics Anonymous was formed, and in 1962, the white book, Narcotics Anonymous, was published. Today there are thousands of these twelve-step group meetings, A.A., N.A., C.A. and others, held all over the country, offering addiction recovery services to addicts who are seeking it. Included in twelve-step drug addiction recovery programs, members attend meetings where they share their experience, strength, and hope, and work the twelve steps. Another important part of recovery is working closely with a sponsor of their choice.

Substance Abuse Counseling

Substance abuse counseling is offered at many counseling centers and counseling clinics. Clients may choose to meet individually with a licensed professional of their choice, to work on their addiction problems.

Community Programs

Community programs are generally offered by local government, such as city, county, or state funded programs. Community programs have the advantage of being more affordable, since they are frequently government funded, while at the same time being difficult to access, due to the overwhelming number of individuals who need addiction treatment. As mentioned previously, many such programs have had their funding cut, which does not help solving the ongoing problems.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Another means of helping the drug addict is an Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP. These programs have been offered by healthcare providers for many years as well, allowing clients to attend evening group meetings and learn about the recovery process. Such programs are generally augmented by attending twelve-step groups, and are sometimes required as part of a court-order when legal issues are involved.

Residential Inpatient Treatment Programs

Many people who are struggling with alcohol addiction and drug addiction are finding intensive help in residential or inpatient treatment programs. When an individual has been engaging in drug use for several years, this is often the only solution. Without inpatient treatment, many individuals will not be able to avoid returning to the pattern of drug abuse.

A residential treatment center offers a safe, supportive, and structured environment for addicts or alcoholics to learn about the disease of chemical dependency, and how to recover from it. Depending on the program, the client may receive individual and family therapy, as well as daily group therapy. Psycho-educational groups are often offered on a variety of topics, such as stress management, anger management, problem solving, communication, relationship dynamics, and relapse prevention, to mention a few. Some programs, like the one offered here at Cirque Lodge, even offer outdoor experiential activities, ropes courses, or equine therapy.

For many, this comprehensive approach provides a solid foundation for drug addiction recovery, and the opportunity for a new way of life in recovery.
