12-Steps in a Mountain Rehab
Treatment at Cirque Lodge is founded on the 12-step program that was originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. When an individual comes into alcohol or drug rehab, they are taught about the disease of addiction and introduced to the 12-steps. We use nature based activities in our experiential program to teach concepts of recovery and lessons from the Big Book.
After the resident has been at Cirque Lodge for a time, they are allowed to attend 12-step meetings and can begin working with a sponsor. This can lay the groundwork for working with a 12-step fellowship and sponsor after alcohol or drug rehab is completed. The network of 12-step groups and programs available in communities after rehab are a solid measure for relapse prevention.
The initial steps of recovery (the ones that are primarily covered in alcohol and drug rehab) deal with individuals making connections to a higher power. Cirque Lodge is not a religious program. We allow individuals to find a higher power in however they conceive it. That is one of the reasons we use experiential activities and nature in our addiction treatment program. It can help the individual in making connections to that power greater than one’s own. Such connections can provide the experiences and internal changes needed to truly recover from addiction. The 12-steps lay the groundwork for this to happen.
