Family Program at Cirque Lodge

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Family Members Hug After Therapy SessionToday begins another Family Week here at Cirque Lodge. Family Week is a special part of the drug rehab experience where all the programming is family based. It occurs every three weeks of the treatment schedule. Residents are encouraged to invite their family members to attend. Family Week is a four day program (usually running Tuesday-Friday) and breakfast and lunch are provided as a part of the experience.

Alcoholism and drug addiction can have a far reaching impact. Family members can also struggle with their loved one’s addiction, as well as their erratic behavior. Trust is at low ebb, and though they want to love and support, it can be difficult. Family Week begins the process of recovery within the family. Lectures and workshops are provided to educate family members on the nature and behaviors of addiction. Programs are also provided to teach the importance of aftercare and continuing to work at recovery. A caring and supportive family can be an influential piece to long term sobriety.

Special therapy sessions are also provided during our family program. The family can have a number of underlying concerns and problems when it comes to addiction and their loved one. Systems therapies are used to address these concerns and begin the healing process. This part of Family Week can be difficult. However, in the long term, can be a platform for healing and rebuilding trust within the family. Family Week at Cirque Lodge can have a lasting impact on recovery. It is not only with the individuals in drug rehab, but also their caring family members.

Using the River in Drug Rehab

The Provo River Near Cirque LodgeThe mountains surrounding Cirque Lodge provide a number of venues for our experiential program. One venue is the Provo River. This River is a well known fly fishing destination. For the residents of our alcohol and drug rehab program, the river is a place for enjoyment, healing and recovery. Experiential activities take advantage of this location. Cirque Lodge residents have a chance to hike along parts of the river, do a bit of fly fishing, and even raft the river. These activities not only make drug rehab more enjoyable, but also help to invoke vital spiritual experiences. Such experiences can create the internal shift needed to overcome addiction.

The experiential program is a profoundly powerful part to the Cirque Lodge recovery experience. These activities make the treatment of addiction a little more manageable. They also teach important lessons on life and overcoming the cognitive mindsets of addiction. The River plays a part in this. Something like fly fishing takes tremendous concentration and discipline. Such discipline can be carried over into the practices of long term sobriety. We want drug rehab at Cirque Lodge to be more than just rehab; we want it to be an experience. Experiential activities, like the ones that use the river, can be influential in having such life changing experiences.
