Recovery Skills with a Ropes Course

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Experiential work is used to challenge those in alcohol or drug rehab.  One of the pieces used in this challenge is Cirque Lodge’s indoor rope course. The ropes course is located inside a 17,000 ft. soundstage in Cirque’s studio facility. It is made up to two very large tripods, which are connected by a series of challenges and climbing events. The events and activities can challenge the alcoholic/addict to think in a different way. This, of course is a direction of recovery, which is much different then solving problems and challenges by getting drunk or high.

The ropes course provides a number of different challenges. Some of them take place high above the ground. Some challenges take place right on the floor. The ropes course provides both activities as a group and as an individual. It provides lessons on problem solving and skills for the recovery process. At first, an individual’s fears can prevent them from taking on high ropes challenges. The experiential staff will gradually work with everyone to obtain comfortable goals during their drug rehab stay. This process can result in individuals overcoming their fears and finding strength within them.

Ropes activities can also teach individual lessons about self and problem solving. Some individuals may not know it, but some problem solving skills can make them natural leaders. Group challenges in the ropes course can require individuals to take a lead, to plan and to problem solve. Other individuals in drug rehab can use these activities to build support and strength for their recovery process. When they leave the safety of the addiction treatment facility, these problem solving skills can be applied to life and maintaining successful sobriety.

Drug Rehab Culinary Program

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Part of the comfort of Cirque Lodge is a delicious culinary program. Residents of our drug rehab facilities are treated to three well balanced meals each day. These meals are what you would expect from a high end addiction treatment facility and are prepared by chefs and culinary professionals. The initial stages of recovery can be a pretty tough go.  Residents of the Cirque Lodge don’t have to worry about the food while they are in rehab. It is prepared according to their dietary needs and supplies needed nutrients to the recovering body.

Many individuals enter alcohol or drug rehab undernourished. The behavior of seeking and using drugs and drink has replaced in many the want or need for food sustenance.  This can leave the body lacking in physical wellness and nutrients needed for healthy living. When the individual comes for addiction treatment at Cirque Lodge, they are provided things to help them obtain a physical recovery from addiction. The culinary program helps to restore nutrients the body needs. Cirque’s experiential program provides the individual with plenty of exercise.

Cirque Lodge has an open kitchen for residents. Whenever they are feeling hungry or need a drink, there are snacks and drinks and other food options available. Meals can also be tailored to meat resident’s personal needs. A good example of this is in the case of alcoholics. Years of alcoholism can lead to type II diabetes. Our culinary staff can prepare meal options to help with the individual’s sugar intake. These needs can be met for various other dietary needs as well, like with kosher meals or vegetarian options. The culinary program at the Cirque can provide residents with the delicious meal options they stand in need of while they begin to work the process of recovery.

Cirque Lodge Family Program

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Every third week of treatment programming at Cirque Lodge is devoted to working with family members. Residents are encouraged to invite their close loved ones to participate in Family Week. This four day long program provides a number of different workshops and activities, based on rehabilitation and recovery. The program can better educate family members on the nature of addiction and can clarify misconceptions that family members might have. The family can play an integral part in the success of recovery. The education of Family Week prepares everyone involved for this role in the recovery process of their loved one.

During Family Week, residents and their loved ones participate in a number of different recovery activities. Cirque Lodge is known for its experiential program. Family members have an opportunity to take part in a few of these fun and engaging activities. Personal family counseling sessions are also scheduled during this week. Therapies can help to clear up misconceptions and provide a place for honest and open communication.

Family Week can help in making preparations for the recovery process. Everyone involved can benefit from support and help along the way. A workshop is provided on the importance of aftercare and the surround of support. The recovering alcoholic/addict and their family members can greatly benefit from receiving additional support along the way. Different aftercare options are discussed and family members are even educated on programs like Alanon that can help them with recovery. All of this is provided within the care of the Cirque Lodge Family Program.

Personalized Treatment in Alcohol and Drug Rehab

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Cirque Lodge provides a personalized treatment for each resident of our alcohol or drug rehab facility. While the clients are sharing the common trait of substance abuse and addiction, their personal vulnerabilities can be very distinct. For many who struggle with alcoholism or drug addiction, it is recovery from these vulnerabilities that is influential in overcoming addiction. To help each client with what they stand in need of from addiction treatment, the program is tailored with a balance of different programming and therapy. At the heart of this drug rehab approach is personalized, one-on-one care from licensed professionals.  The individual is treated for their vulnerabilities and provided with programs to help them through the recovery process.

Individualized alcohol or drug rehab begins with an assessment of the individual. When the client is admitted into the program, they undergo a very extensive assessment process. This process is utilized in determining the individual’s needs. The battery of tests helps the clinical staff in determining the resident’s vulnerabilities and needs. This assessment is used to create a treatment plan for that individual. This plan is continually monitored and adjusted throughout the resident’s stay to supply them with the best possible approach to care.

Cirque Lodge has a staff of licensed professional counselors. Each resident is assigned a counselor for their drug rehab stay. This counselor oversees the treatment plan of the client. Counselors also provide personal therapy sessions and family therapies. This is an ideal environment for dealing with personal vulnerabilities and underlying struggles that have a hand in addiction. Personalized treatment also consists of a Continuing Care Plan for the recovery process. This is a personalized plan of action for continuing the efforts of recovery after alcohol and drug rehab is completed.

Recovery Activities on the River

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Cirque Lodge is located near the Provo River. This River is renowned for its fly fishing and in the summer it is a destination for rafting. Cirque Lodge uses these activities within its experiential program. Residents of our drug rehab facilities have opportunities to do some rafting down this river. Cirque residents can also do some fishing during their addiction treatment stay. These elements can help to show the joys life. They can provide a replacement for the cravings of alcoholism or drug addiction.

Experiential work is balanced into the clinical and recovery elements of the Cirque Lodge drug rehab program. Experiential activities provide a unique way to develop skills for the recovery process. Different activities and challenges provide lessons for the body, mind and spirit. When combined with the intensive efforts of alcohol and drug rehab, experiential work is an effective avenue for recovery. It helps to make the entire experience more fun and engaging. The spiritual aspects to the experiential program at Cirque Lodge can even be life changing.

Residents also go for walks and hikes along the different river locations of the canyon.  Waterfalls and beautiful natural spots are experienced. With this come lessons of recovery. These occasions are used to teach concepts from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and to have recovery discussions. On some occasions residents can take time along the river for meditation and reflection. For some, this can be a venue for connecting to a high power. These fun and engaging nature activities are just a part of the Cirque Lodge experience. It is combination of all these efforts that have helped many find a means to long term sobriety.

Connections with Horses

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The Cirque Lodge horse program provides a unique and effective lesson for those in alcohol or drug rehab. Horses are perfectly honest and provide direct feedback. They hold no personal ill will towards anyone, but the horse must trust the individual before they will work with them. After this trust is established, the horse becomes partners with the alcoholic/addict, even protective of them. The process of gaining the trust of this horse is part of the exercise. For some in drug rehab, this is a real challenge.

Gaining the trust of the horse can take great patience. The alcoholic/addict is usually use to immediate gratification. When they have to work to gain the trust of the horse, the frustration can set in. Horses are acutely aware and can sense the individual’s intentions. Some residents try to impose their will on the horse and blame the horse for not cooperating. This is met with the horse fleeing from the situation entirely and the process starting all over again. It is only when the individual realizes the issue is with themselves and not with the horse that the exercise begins to unfold.

The equine experience completely changes when a connection is made between the drug rehab resident and the horse they are working with. To both parties, this can be a powerful connection. For some this connection only comes when they realize they are powerless and ask for help. Others find this connection when the horse is willing to submit to commands and follow without a lead rope. Many residents are struggling in individual ways when they work with the horse. It seems from this exercise the gain what they stand in need of.
