After rehab is completed, a 12-step fellowship can provide strength and support for the recovery process. Even though a person has completed alcohol and drug rehab, the influences and cravings of alcohol and drugs doesn’t go away. Back in the real world, the temptations to drink or use can be strong at times. Active enrollment in a 12-step fellowship can help individuals to stay focused on their daily goals of sobriety. This is most critical in the initial months of recovery. It takes time in sobriety to strengthen one’s resolve. 12-step fellowships and addiction sponsors can provide the support needed for the difficult times, when resolve is not so strong.

A continuing care plan is prepared with many elements of treatment help following alcohol and drug rehab. At the foundation of the continuing care plan is an active enrollment in 12-step meetings. A fellowship will appoint a sponsor to help for the initial months of the recovery process. Involvement in 12-step meetings can keep the individual focused on sober goals and helps to maintain that all important connection to one’s higher power.
