Drug Rehab and a 12-step Recovery

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Establishing a Connection with a Higher PowerTreatment at Cirque Lodge is founded on the 12-step program. A 12-step recovery lays the groundwork for life after rehab. The drug rehab program at Cirque Lodge is centered on making progress through the initial steps of the 12-step process. Some individuals are only in alcohol and drug rehab for a short period of time. Their goal is to have a solid foundation of these initial steps. One must come to terms with their addiction problem and realize that they are powerless against it.

An integral aspect of the 12-step process to recovery is to establish a connection with a higher power. However the individual conceives their higher power, this aspect is imperative. At Cirque Lodge, the focus is to provide vital spiritual experiences for our drug rehab clients. Such experiences create an internal shift. It changes convictions. It can make enduring the pains of the recovery process a little easier. Whether out on the mountain or in a therapy session, one can find their higher power to help them through the struggles of addiction.

After rehab, the 12-step process is continued through support meetings and programs. After completing the drug rehab program, the individual in recovery is once again tempted by the situations of their addictive lifestyle. The 12-step program can be a means of staying clean and sober. Cirque Lodge clients are prepared a continuing care plan, prior to leaving the drug rehab facility. A part of this continuing care plan is enrollment in a specific 12-step support program. Recovery from alcohol and drug addiction is a process, not an event. Through a solid connection with a higher power, and the support of sponsors and others, this process can be made a little easier.

The Joy of a Successful RecoveryAfter someone leaves alcohol and drug rehab, it still can take time to overcome the influences of addiction. A person can feel changes and focused after leaving a drug rehab program. Some call the “pink glow”. However, unless they are continuing to work at recovery, the odds of them staying sober begin to slim. Recovery is a process, not an event. It takes time and effort. The help and support of 12-step meetings and family support can keep the individual focused on working at their recovery.

At Cirque Lodge, this support and 12-step work is established from the beginning. One focus of the alcohol and drug rehab program is to provide vital spiritual experiences. Such experience can establish a solid connection with a higher power. This connection is needed throughout the recovery process. In times of struggle, one’s higher power can be the support that is required.

Most experts will say it takes about a year of successful recovery before the influences of using and drinking begin to subside. Each day sober is a new step in the direction of successful recovery. Cirque Lodge helps clients of our drug rehab program with an aftercare plan. This plan provides the client with programs and therapy to assist them through the recovery process. Cirque Lodge also offers aftercare programs weekly for graduates of the addiction treatment program on campus. A solid connection with a higher power, and the right elements of continuing care, can help the recovering addict in working towards successful sobriety.

Serenity Prayer in 12-step MeetingOvercoming the influences of addiction is a process. It takes time for the central nervous system to overcome the impulses of drugs and alcohol. After someone leaves alcohol rehab or drug rehab, they are still subject to the influences of addiction. The 12-step program provides a guideline to follow after someone has completed rehab. Cirque Lodge is founded on a 12-step recovery. A part of the alcohol and drug addiction program is to develop a strong base in the 12-step program. A rehab stay isn’t nearly long enough to work all steps of the program, however. After drug rehab is completed, the role of 12-step recovery is carried out through 12-step support meetings and groups.

Working with an addiction sponsor can be a vital part of 12-step recovery. An addiction sponsor can be helpful in many ways. They are an example of successful recovery. They can be an assistant in critical times of need. They can provide support in a number of ways. A sponsor can help the individual in continuing to work the 12-steps of successful recovery. When this recovery is achieved, the individual can be a sponsor to someone else in need. Helping others is just a part of the 12-steps and traditions of addiction recovery.

Over time, the impulses to drink and use lessen, the connection with a higher power strengthens, and the commitment to stay sober is better solidified. This is a process, but can be life saving element for those who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction.

Treatment From Those in RecoveryWhen talking to a member of the Cirque Lodge staff, many of them can tell you their own recovery story. Many staff members have walked a similar road of addiction, and have found their own successful recovery. For residents of the Cirque Lodge facilities, it gives them a chance to work with someone who has had very similar experiences. It adds a level of empathy to the alcohol and drug rehab program that is offered.

Many individuals, who have walked the path of addiction and found recovery, oftentimes turn to the field of addiction treatment. It strengthens them in their own recovery, but allows them to help others find the same. In working the 12-step program, the final step is to take the experiences of recovery and to share them with others. By working in a drug rehab setting, individuals in recovery have a daily chance to share the message of the program with those who stand in need.
