Prescription Drugs and Addiction
On Friday, The FDA released a list of 20 prescription medications that are listed for a potential of serious risks. The vast majority of the list has to do with some experimental medications for specific conditions. There is one however, OxyContin, which is on the list for a different reason. The risk the FDA states is drug misuse, abuse and overdose.
Pain medications containing hydrocodone and oxycodone (OxyContin is oxycodone hydrochloride time released) are meant to be a short term solution usually. Exposure to the drug over time can result in developing a psychological and physical dependence. Now, individuals with pain will tell you that these meds are life savers, but what about when there is no pain? Sometimes ending the prescription is not a possibility. However, the problem isn’t pain, its addiction.
At Cirque Lodge, we have seen an increase in the numbers of individuals in drug rehab for prescription drugs. Sadly, it is still continuing to grow. Treatment is the way out of these problems for most individuals. Treatment at Cirque Lodge is an effective approach of the 12-step program, personalized therapies, and experiential activities. If someone you know is struggling with prescription meds, perhaps an alcohol or drug rehab program would be best for them.
