One of the experiential therapy activities we are most known for is our equine experience. Residents have the opportunity to work with horses year round. We have both indoor and outdoor venues for our horse program. This experience is highly effective at teaching lessons of recovery and providing a moving experience. At first, however, this experience poses a challenge. Horses are naturally creatures of flight. The addict/alcoholic must establish a trust with the horse for the activity to continue. This requires them to leave behind the mindset that is developed through addiction and work open and honestly with another living creature.

Residents gain exactly what they need from this exercise. Each individual can have very different needs, but it seems that working with the horses seems to provide that. Our experiential staff members who work with the horses are available to offer help and support throughout the exercise. This can be a valuable lesson in asking for help with things that are beyond our control. When the resident and horse makes a connection, the horse becomes absolutely entrusted to the individual. This oftentimes is an opportunity for having vital spiritual experiences. It can be a very powerful connection.
