Intervention: The Honorable Approach

The Storti Model™ of Motivational Intervention™ has been developed and refined by Ed Storti over the past 30 years as he has choreographed more than 3,000 interventions throughout the world. His efforts have touched the lives of alcoholics, addicts and others suffering from acute illness. His technique has also been modified to intervene on eating disorders, unhealthy lifestyles, personality disorders and grave medical illness including cancer and HIV.

When you are living with a family member addicted to mind-altering substances: alcohol, cocaine, prescription drugs, marijuana, etc., you keep waiting for a moment in that person's life to spark his/her action toward finally getting help. The myth is that you have to wait until your loved one hits their bottom due to their disease of addiction or until they ask for help! Sadly, the bottom can mean death, insanity or a lifestyle unbecoming for all involved.

Most people who go for help are often forced by negative consequences or threats-- usually a crisis involving family, friends, job, legal disaster, accident, etc. Motivational Intervention™ is designed to create a positive crisis.

Mr. Storti developed the theory that since the patient is physically/psychologically deteriorating or dying from an addictive disease (as most do if they don't get help), why not do a living eulogy, i.e., a positive presentation in front of them. "Let's honor them at that moment; let's give them reason to feel that they are special, that they are meaningful." Mr. Storti's philosophy is to present the gift of treatment to the addicted individual within a positive atmosphere of dignity, trust and compassion.

There is no need for family or friends to continually live with fear, anger, remorse, powerlessness or frustration. You are dealing with a disease, a powerful disease, one that is progressive, chronic and fatal. However, because it is also highly predictable, you have the ability to create a positive crisis in your loved one's life. You can motivate your loved one to get the help he/she desperately needs. Through education and self-awareness, your loved one then can become responsible for their issues of past, present and future.
