Why is Treatment Needed?

Substance abuse has always been with us, but in the last twenty years it has developed into an ever more complicated problem that afflicts both society and the individual. Within a relatively short period of time, individuals who become addicted to alcohol or drugs can find themselves cut off from family members, overwhelmed with financial stress, and unable to stop using the alcohol and/or drugs that initially seemed to be so enjoyable. 1. Attending 12-Step Meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, among others, and working a program using the Twelve Steps, with the help of a sponsor. For some individuals, this can work, but it requires a high level of motivation and commitment in order to motivate oneself to get to meetings in order to get support and help. Many programs require or strongly suggest that chemically dependent individuals attend 12-Step meetings following substance abuse rehab as part of an aftercare plan.
2. Attending an IOP, or Intensive Outpatient Program for substance abuse treatment. These programs vary, but generally consist of treatment during the evening hours, after work, for a certain number of weeks. They offer the convenience of allowing individuals to continuing with work responsibilities, when they are able. Again, this requires a high level of motivation and commitment in order to consistently attend and acquire the necessary skills to abstain from alcohol and drugs.
3. Attending an Inpatient Program is the most effective treatment for those who are chemically dependent and have been using drugs and alcohol for a long period of time. Inpatient programs offer intensive treatment, and often include individual therapy, group therapy, and psychoeducational groups that address a variety of problems related to alcohol or drug addiction.
