What is Xanax?

Xanax is the brand name of the drug alprazolam. It is one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States and is known for its ability to treat anxiety disorders. It is part of the benzodiazepine family and works by suppressing the central nervous system, thereby reducing feelings of anxiety or panic, and eliciting a general sense of calm.

Despite its usefulness as a prescription drug, Xanax bars have found use outside of treating panic attacks. Xanax, or fake Xanax, has been used as an illicit drug that is abused recreationally. Even though it requires a doctor's prescription, Xanax can be found in the medicine cabinets of many Americans. Xanax abuse has become a prevalent problem in the United States, quickly becoming one of the most abused prescription drugs on the market and a common street drug.

Identifying Xanax Bars

Identifying Xanax Bars

There are a variety of different colored types of Xanax bars, oftentimes produced by several different pharmaceutical companies. Blue Xanax is just one such type. It is important to be able to tell the difference, as they vary in potency and dosage. A Xanax bar refers to the shape of the pills themselves, as they are long and thin. Colored Xanax pills may be confusing at first, but it should be noted the only main difference is the dosage and the producer. The recommended dose of a Xanax pill is between 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg. Some common ones include:

Blue Xanax

A blue Xanax bar is usually oval in shape and contains a 1 mg dose. Due to its shape, it is sometimes referred to as blue football alprazolam. A blue Xanax pill can be easily split in half.

White Xanax

A white Xanax bar contains 2 mg per pill. White Xanax bars can be split into four pieces, each containing a 0.5 mg dose.

Yellow Xanax

A yellow Xanax bar also contains a 2 mg dose of the generic form of alprazolam. This kind of Xanax is sometimes called "yellow school bus".

Green Xanax

Similarly to a white Xanax bar, a green Xanax bar contains 2 mg of alprazolam. Unlike the white Xanax bars, however, they can be split into three segments. The effects of a green Xanax bar are similar to those of the white and yellow versions.

Purple Xanax

Purple Xanax bars usually come in an oval shape, with a 1 mg dosage. A purple Xanax bar can be easily split in half.

Orange Xanax

Orange alprazolam is oval in shape and contains only 0.5 mg. Ideal for less serious cases of anxiety. Can also sometimes be referred to as a "peach Xanax" bar. The entire bar can be consumed without increased risk of overdose or side effects.

Being Aware of Fake Xanax

Just as with other drugs that end up being used illicitly, there is always the chance that you are inadvertently given fake Xanax if you are buying them from illegal suppliers. Fake Xanax bars have the potential to be extremely dangerous if they are laced with other drugs. They can also simply contain dangerously high doses of alprazolam, which can be a problem by itself. If you are taking Xanax, you should always check the pill you are given.

If you abuse alprazolam pills, you already are running the risk of developing a dangerous addiction. Therefore, you should mitigate any risk that you can. Each of the other colored Xanax pills we have described should have a mark imprinted on them by the pharmaceutical companies that produce them. Always verify that the producer, color, and mark match so as to avoid fake Xanax.

Side Effects of Blue Xanax

Side Effects of Blue Xanax

Blue Xanax pills are potent medications that have the capacity to help people deal with severe pain (usually muscle pain), as well as for treating panic disorders. It has the capacity to induce a variety of side effects such as:

  • Drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Poor coordination
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulties concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach
  • Muscle weakness

Xanax should usually not be administered to elderly patients, as it can exacerbate issues concerning balance and result in serious physical injury. It should also not be prescribed to pregnant women as it may cause fetal abnormalities.

Additionally, Xanax has a number of unwanted interactions with others drugs including birth control, antibiotics, antidepressants, and cold medicine. In order to avoid complications, or unwanted physical symptoms, do not mix Xanax with other medications unless it is done with adequate medical supervision.

Blue Xanax Addiction Potential

Blue Xanax Addiction Potential

Xanax bars, despite their effectiveness in treating panic attacks, have been long known for their capacity to create a Xanax addiction to the extent that it limits its clinical usefulness. It has been conclusively found that taking blue Xanax over a long period of time increases the chance that you will become addicted. It is for this reason that Xanax abuse has become so common.

Along with addiction can come physical dependence, wherein your body becomes unable to function without the presence of Xanax. Addiction can have a serious impact on your life, and the strong withdrawal symptoms that it produces can deter people from seeking help. Xanax addiction can present itself in a number of ways, but you should look out for:

  • Cravings for a Xanax tablet
  • Needing more and more to achieve the same feeling
  • Having your life revolve around obtaining Xanax
  • Interpersonal problems due to your Xanax abuse
  • Academic or professional issues due to your Xanax consumption

These can all be signs that you are on the road to a Xanax addiction that can ultimately destabilize your life, and cause you to go through unpleasant withdrawal when you decide to quit, as with many other forms of drug abuse.

Dealing With Withdrawal Symptoms

Dealing With Withdrawal Symptoms

While Xanax is sometimes not considered a seriously dangerous drug due to how common it is as an anti-anxiety medication, you should not overlook the risks that blue Xanax can have on your body. Xanax dependency can be hard to shake, and trying to can sometimes cause a rebound of the anxiety symptoms you were trying to treat.

If you use blue Xanax for longer than a month, you will likely experience withdrawal symptoms once you decide to stop, and the withdrawal period is usually considered more severe than those produced by other benzodiazepines. Xanax withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Headaches
  • Sweating
  • High blood pressure
  • Tremors
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Rebound anxiety disorders
  • Mood swings
  • Paranoia
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Depression

We can see that the withdrawal effects of blue Xanax pills have the potential to be serious. Alprazolam abuse can also lead to people ending up in the emergency wards of hospitals. However, these withdrawal symptoms can be managed if you choose medical detox. In doing so you will be able to have access to drug therapies that allow you to heal safely within a treatment facility.

In these cases, you will usually be administered a lower potency benzodiazepine in order to help you taper off blue Xanax slowly. So just because Xanax withdrawal is dangerous if you decide to quit cold turkey by yourself does not mean you cannot find help and proper medical supervision to assist you through it.
