What types of drug treatment are there?

There are many types of addiction treatment available for those with substance abuse problems. Primarily the decision on what type of drug treatment to choose comes down to inpatient or outpatient types of care. Outpatient programs allow the individual to stay at home to receive care. Inpatient or residential care provides a bed and place for the drug addicted individual away from their home environment. Inpatient care is often regarded as a more effective treatment approach. It is more focused on the individual with around-the-clock programs.

Does my loved one need a residential program?

Residential drug treatment is needed for individuals who are struggling with a severe alcohol or substance use disorder. When it is not possible for the addict to stop or even lessen their drug abuse this level of intervention can be required. Inpatient or residential drug rehab care also can provide treatment for individuals who are struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders and concerns. 40-60% of drug-addicts struggle with a form of mental health disorder in addition to that of substance use disorders.

How do I determine what program is best for my loved one?

It can benefit you to do a little research when deciding on an alcohol or drug treatment facility. The most important decision is to decide what exactly your loved one needs from care. Addiction treatment programs do offer different types of care and models of treatment. You can research these out online in deciding on a program or drug rehab facility. It can also help you to get professional advice if you cannot decide or determine what the best approach is.

How long does one stay in treatment?

The length of stay in drug treatment varies upon the individual and the program. Court ordered treatment can be set for a certain amount of time. The length of stay in a residential alcohol rehab can also vary upon the facility. Drug addiction is a chronic condition requiring long-term efforts to overcome. The best measure is that the individual has in place a continuum of appropriate treatments, therapies and care to help them stay clean and sober over a long-term. Research has shown that longer treatment stays have better outcomes, because it gives the individual enough time to develop the coping skills needed for relapse prevention.

What is involved in counseling / therapy?

Counseling can involve many aspects of therapy and care. It also can depend on the drug treatment center what type of counseling is offered. Some programs are based solely on group types of counseling, which is not always the most effective approach. Individual counseling sessions provide a private setting for dealing with more personal matters and struggles. Counseling also looks into the cognitive and behavioral problems and helps them through creating coping strategies for the recovery process. Family counseling can also be required to overcome some of the underlying problems of drug abuse.

What is involved with a continuum of care?

Long-term recovery can require additional drug treatment and programming after the initial rehabilitation program or facility. A continuum of care helps to keep the ball rolling with appropriate levels of support and therapy after the resident leaves the safety and confines of an addiction treatment facility. The recovering person is in a very fragile state and can be in need of additional sober living help which is available. This should be coupled with additional therapies or groups. A 12-step program based treatment will continue the recovery process by attending meetings of A.A., Narcotics Anonymous or another appropriate support group.

What is the treatment based on?

There are a number of proven treatments, both scientifically and through experience that have shown to be beneficial in treating chemical dependency. This consists of both therapies and support types of programs. One such approach is through behavioral therapies and effective treatments involving individual, group and even some have family therapy sessions. In addition to discussing treatment and therapies that a program offers, it is also important to learn about those who provides the personalized treatment. A good rule of thumb is to find programs that have licensed, practicing addiction professionals which is sometimes not the case.

What is involved in the treatment program?

No single treatment works for everyone. Effective addiction treatment should work to meet varying needs of alcoholics and addicts. This means more than just therapy in most cases, it can be considered as experiential therapy. It needs to be a combination of services that involves medical help if needed, as well as family and social support. Mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, PTSD) also co-occur with alcohol and drug addiction quite often. A program should be able to help with such concerns with dual diagnosis, medications and therapies.

In what ways does therapy help?

You will find in drug treatment a number of therapies are used to address addiction. One of the more effective categories is cognitive behavioral therapy. Addiction is very much a central nervous system disease and issue. Cognitive behavioral treatments work directly with behaviors and thought impulses. It breaks down behavioral patterns and uses positive reinforcement to help with modification if needed. Alcohol abuse can become an uncontrollable impulse supplied by the brain. In addition to addressing these impulses by changing the thought processes, it also introduces a wide variety of therapeutic coping strategies.

Therapy and care is offered on independent, group and family levels. The importance of independent treatment is in dealing with specifics. Those in rehab can have very different needs as far as treatment goes. Independent counseling helps to determine any underlying factors involved and provides resolutions for them. Independent counseling also helps to determine the progress of the person through therapy and if any specific adjustments are needed within their individualized treatment plan.

The importance of group therapy programs is for structure and support. You will find in many environments what is lacking is support from peers and family. This is needed to inspire that individual in the recovery process. The many group based programs can be the structure of a support group or even a fun or unique activity. All of these types of programs are provided to help introduce both support and structure to that individual.

What about success rates?

When you do searches on the web, you will see addiction treatment facilities that are open about their success rates, even boastful. Seeing high success rates can be very tempting. After all you want your loved one to recover and to get your money’s worth. Studies have shown that success rates when it comes to addiction treatments are not entirely accurate. Programs can qualify these numbers in a number of ways. One example is by only counting individuals who have successfully finished the program. It is also not uncommon for alcoholics/addicts who have relapsed to not be entirely honest on follow-up phone calls. So be wary when it comes to success rates. You should make decisions from the answers you receive by asking informed questions.
