What is Psychoeducation?
Psychoeducation refers to the method of educating individuals who are faced with substance abuse disorders, co-occurring mental health disorders, and dual diagnoses.
It is typically used in conjunction with other approaches of group-based therapies and cognitive-behavioral treatments. The intention of this effort is to provide individuals struggling with addictions the knowledge needed to better understand their malady and the empowerment needed to cope with it.
Typically psychoeducation elements involve evidence-based research and cover a broad spectrum of topics. It provides a more thorough understanding of the nature of addiction and the disease model. The workshops also teach in-depth about the biology, psychology, and recovery process of this disease. Great effort is also taken to instruct about the reality of relapse and the methods of prevention that are available.
At Cirque Lodge, we strive to provide our residents with the type of engaging lectures and workshops that they can apply to their recovery. When all is said and done, we want them to be experts at their disease and any other mental health disorders they may be diagnosed with. When the treatment is completed, this knowledge can be an invaluable tool for coping and continuing on in the recovery process. Even when relapse occurs, it is our hope that alumni will have an understanding of what needs to be done next to get back on the path of sobriety.
